Women's Caucus ASEAN Campaign

IWRAW Asia Pacific is part of the organizing team of the Women’s Caucus, which was formed in September 2008, as a network of women’s organisations from Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, and coordinated by 2 regional organisations i.e. International Women’s Rights Action Watch Asia Pacific (IWRAW Asia Pacific) and Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law and Development (APWLD) to campaign for the full integration of women’s human rights and inclusion of gender perspective into all the ASEAN structures and processes, including the three new mechanisms being developed at present: ASEAN Inter-Governmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC) and the ASEAN Committee on the Implementation of the ASEAN Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers (AMCW).

Since the establishment of the ASEAN Charter which creates a new rule based environment for ASEAN and mandated the creation of the AICHR (then AHRB) and coordination of all human rights organs within ASEAN with this new human rights mechanism, the Women’s Caucus has been engaged at civil society level and in lobbying ASEAN and government actors on ensuring that international human rights standards will be met and treaty obligations be implemented and supported through the various parallel mechanisms for human rights monitoring being set up under ASEAN. It also calls for the inclusion of a strong protection mandate in the TOR of the AICHR (then AHRB).
