Internship at IWRAW Asia Pacific
IWRAW Asia Pacific’s unpaid internship programme offers successful applicants exposure to a range of women's human rights issues and knowledge on CEDAW and related treaty bodies. Interns will also be able to gain research, advocacy and/or organising skills. Depending on the duration and timing of the internship, we also usually provide interns with a chance to gain hands-on experience through involvement in one of our trainings.
In general, the intern is expected to contribute to areas of work relevant to the objectives and strategies of the organization. This may involve the intern developing position papers on various issues relating to women’s rights; undertaking research, collation and analysis of cases and principles; and contributing to trainings/meetings/consultations in various ways. Some of the possible substantive areas that the interns may be asked to work on are:
- Rights based approach to development in the Global era
- Work to promote understanding and use of CEDAW and the Optional Protocol to CEDAW (including the application of CEDAW to new and emerging human rights issues)
- Integrating and implementing international human rights through national mechanisms
- Thematic areas including migration, resistance to women’s human rights from cultural factors, the issues of women affected by conflict, sexual orientation and gender identity and Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR) and justiciability of ESCR rights
- Development of tools to support various CEDAW strategies including legal resources
Partially funded Internship /Secondment Programme for young women from the Global South
At this time IWRAW Asia Pacific is also seeking to more directly enhance skills and capacity of women’s human rights advocates in the Global South through its staff development and funded internships/secondments.
The development of capacity for women’s human rights implementation can be enhanced through staff development and annual programme where staff are empowered and equipped with relevant knowledge and at the same time able to increase the understanding of the fundamental principles of human rights.
IWRAW Asia Pacific will thus also prioritize internships for women from the Global South and 6-month work secondments for young women’s human rights activists from the global South, especially staff/individuals from our national partner networks.
The funds are limited but in principle IWRAW will cover accommodation and meal costs, local transport and return flight to and from country. IWRAW Asia Pacific will also agree to write support letters if the intern is able to secure a scholarship.
